ABB Webinar: Harmonic Mitigation Strategies - Choosing between an Active Front End vs Active Filter Solution
August 11, 2021 , 1:00pm - 2:00pm

There are a variety of ways to mitigate harmonics caused by variable frequency drives (VFDs). After a quick overview on harmonics, IEEE 519, and an assortment of mitigation techniques, this webinar focuses on comparing an Active Front End (AFE) drive to an Active Filter (AF) strategy. AFE drives are considered a decentralized mitigation strategy and the harmonics are taken care of at the VFD. In HVAC applications, active filters are most often applied in a centralized mitigation strategy and the harmonics are taken care of at one point in the system. Both strategies have their own unique advantages. After attending this webinar an engineer will have a better understanding of when to apply which strategy. Armstrong Pumps Webinar: Protecting Pumps from Surface Erosion and Performance Degradation
July 27, 2021 , 11:00am - 12:00pm

When mechanical systems sit idle for extended periods, uncoated iron components exposed to water will naturally oxidize. The formation of rust between the impeller and the casing of a pump can cause the impeller to stick or seize. Cathodic electrodeposition (CED) coating, or E-coating, prevents the formation of rust in a pump, which in turn avoids the issue of seizing and prevents damage during start-up. Armstrong has recently published a whitepaper on the subject. In this webinar we will discuss the potential for oxidization, the harm it can do to surfaces within the pump and the eventual effect on the performance and efficiency of the HVAC system. We will also look at the process for CED coating and how it, along with services for Active Performance Management, preserves and protects system performance. This session will be of interest to contractors, operators, system designers, maintenance personnel and owners. 1 PDH Credit available.

Condair Webinar - Reimagining Schools to Protect Student and Teacher Health
June 22, 2021 , 2:00pm - 3:00pm

This webinar will take a deep dive into how you can manage the indoor environment of schools to protect students and staff from respiratory viruses and other infectious microbes. Keeping schools healthy will minimize the spread of infections which will result in reduced absenteeism and improve focus for a more productive school day. Schools, like most buildings were originally constructed as shelters to protect occupants from extreme outdoor conditions and other natural threats. In the last several decades, however, the relentless pursuit of energy and operating efficiency, in addition to the use of synthetic building materials, have created buildings that often do the opposite: contribute to the spread of infectious diseases and other occupant illnesses. The insights gained from the Covid-19 pandemic have shown just how much we depend on properly managed buildings for almost all aspects of our lives! Respiratory infections cause huge productivity losses and generate considerable healthcare expenses that must be borne both by businesses and society at large. The catastrophic consequences for the economy have been vividly demonstrated by the coronavirus lockdowns. Flu infections alone are responsible for more than 500 million cases worldwide every year. In this alarming time, we are excited to inform you about clear and actionable steps you can take to protect schools from viral spread indoors. Join us for this webinar to learn how to maintain a healthier school to reduce the spread of infectious disease and to keep students and teachers safe.

At the same time, many in the industry are already working to meet the heating demands of the upcoming fall and winter seasons. Our panel of experts will answer questions on temperature, humidity control and maintenance of cooling plants, plus heating plant types, including heat pumps (ground source, water and air source), boilers (gas, electric, biomass, oil) and variable refrigerant systems. We’ll also take questions on Armstrong solutions and services. This session will be of interest to contractors, design engineers, building owners, operators and maintenance personnel. 1 PDH Credit Available.

April 13, 2021 , 11:00am - 12:00pm

Energy savings are a key reason for the use of variable speed controls in HVAC pumping applications. It’s generally accepted that the energy savings support the purchase of variable speed controls for variable flow applications. But the potential for energy savings in constant flow systems is not as well documented. This webinar will present the findings from a recent survey by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) comparing the energy savings potential for variable and constant flow pumping systems. You’ll learn about Armstrong’s intelligent pumping technology plus the benefits of connectivity. We’ll also discuss Active Performance Management and how that approach represents ‘best practice’ for optimizing HVAC systems. This session will be of interest to Consulting Engineers, HVAC System Designers, Contractors and Facility Managers. 1 PDH Credit Available.

Armstrong Pumps Webinar: Get the Most Out of Your Pumps with Higher Operating Speeds
August 18, 2020 , 11:00am

Like many motorized components with variable speed capability, pumps in HVAC systems and pressure booster systems can operate at many different speeds within a range or continuum. But even though a pump can operate at a certain speed, it doesn't necessarily mean that it should. Almost every pump will have an optimal operating speed at which the pump is providing the required flow but using minimal energy. Design Envelope pumps offer high efficiencies across a range of duty points but are capable of higher RPMs than pumps using standard induction motors. Join us Tuesday, August 18th for a discussion of pump and optimization and discover how much energy and cost savings are available with the right choice of pump for your system.

Armstrong Pumps Webinar: The Advantages of Hydronic Systems versus Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF)
August 4, 2020 , 11:00am

Armstrong recently announced the release of a new technical whitepaper: The Advantages of Hydronic Systems versus Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) – A Critical Analysis. This new whitepaper presents a review of technical literature plus post-installation analysis of three types of HVAC systems, and reveals that cost-savings claims made by VRF manufacturers are not supported by the data. Hydronic systems are less expensive than VRF systems, and Hydronic systems that use Design Envelope technology are far less expensive. In HVAC design discussions, a good working knowledge of the facts will support informed conversations that lead to positive results. This webinar event will present the findings from the whitepaper and answer questions. The content will be of interest to HVAC system designers, mechanical contractors, building owners and developers. PDH certificates available on request.

Green HVAC is at the forefront of building design programs as modern building codes and requirements stress energy conservation more than ever. Clean-air requirements and maximizing available floor space have become key elements in the construction of commercial and industrial buildings. Ductwork used in HVAC construction is evolving to meet these demands. Traditional fabrication and insulation methods are being replaced with phenolic pre-insulated ductwork leading to reduced air leakage, reduced energy consumption, and reduced installation time. The Sheet Metal and Air-Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) published its first standards for phenolic duct in May 2015. These are also approved by the American National Standards Institute.
